Some dangerous souls lead lives like loaded guns.

Captain Samuel McCord is such a man. His nature is that of a poet and a philosopher. His family dying in a Comanche raid right before his eyes changed all that.

Violence and death has stalked him since that day. Becoming blood brother to a not fully human Apache shaman changed McCord further. He sees around the corner in reality.

By 1853, he has become a pariah among the Texas Rangers, assigned certain death assignments. Traveling the world, McCord saves Princess Victoria's life, sets Napoleon III on his throne, and fights against both sides in the Chinese Opium War. Every crown prince of Europe and the Orient has set a bounty on his life.

McCord could care less. Someone has murdered the young girl he raised from a tiny baby. The murderer took the girl's face to wear as a mask. She was last seen in the company of someone only known as the Gray Man.

McCord tracks the Gray Man to the transatlantic steamer, DEMETER. As the ship enters the waters of the Bermuda Triangle, McCord learns that fully a fourth of the passengers are undead in some form or other.

It is not a pleasure cruise. It is a stocked pond.

An elite stocked pond Ralph Waldo Emerson. His first wife, Ellen Tucker. Ada Byron. Horace Greeley. Sir Robert Peel. Margaret Fuller. Daniel Webster. Count de Morey. The courtesan Cora Pearl.

And only half of these illustrious luminaries are undead.

But revenants, flesh-eating insects, soul-draining shadows, and other forms of madness will not stop McCord. Not even the mysterious Gray Man.

McCord will catch the murderer of the young girl who reminded him of his murdered sister. There is no fail.

Then, the one thing he never expected comes into his life love. Love in the deadly form of an alien born of stardust and the sea.

McCord can fight any enemy, but can he survive the love of a deadly goddess?

Who could resist such a prestigious line up (referring to the product description) of historical figures? The stories of McCord's globe spanning adventures is told through argumentative dialogue between the notorious celebrities as they either criticize his failures or extol his heroism. As the synopsis reveals, few of the notables are still among the living, and even the mystical creatures encountered in the salon and on deck have their stories of McCord's past deeds to share.

The esteemed author William Faulkner (who is the narrator of the novel) sets the tone in our initial meeting with Sam McCord with this excerpt (reprinted with permission by the author):

. .This time he was already sitting on the bench, laughing. I sat down beside him and asked what was so funny. He looked at me for a long moment.

"I am," he said.

And that was the great tragedy of his character, for he meant it.

. . .he expected people to mock and ridicule him. He expected people nowhere near his equal in stature or accomplishment or wit or anything else, to hold him in scorn and derision.

The theme of the novel explores the darker side of human motivation, each scene well crafted to expound on the selfishness inherent in even the most well intentioned deeds. It is during the exploration of one of those misdeeds that McCord is drawn to the moonlit deck of the Demeter and meets the sea goddess Meilori. Their shared loses bind them as soul mates.

Despite the shortcomings of humans as a species, Capt. Sam is the defender of all creatures suffering oppression by others. While he's heavily armed with all the weapons of the era, McCord's preferred weapon is verbal debate on the morality of the opponents. The plot climax does involve a well written action scene.

Without spoiling the novel too much: McCord enters the salon, knowing it is a clever trap set by his nemesis DayStar, also known as The Gray Man. Throughout the novel, Elu (who exists solely in the shadows between worlds and enters our world by way of mirrors) has consistently removed all McCords weapons without explanation. The reasoning becomes clear as McCord moves through the undead minions on his way to the final showdown with his enemy.

The interaction with the mirrors, Elu, the exchange of weapons, and the magical folding of short distances of time/space left me riveted to the page, panting with the excitement, all the way to the head of the room and then . .

But you'll have to read what happens for yourself, as the ending is a complete and unexpected surprise that also sets the reader up for the sequel, Adrift In The Time Stream.

I give Rites of Passage a 5 star rating for the historical/mythological research effort that went into the crafting of this novel, and for the realistic character development.

RITES OF PASSAGE eBook Roland Yeomans Leonora Roy Reviews

Rites of Passage features one of my newfound favorite characters the undead antihero Sam McCord, former Texas Ranger who stands in the gap between the spirit world and the humans they prey upon -- or as McCord likes to put it, between the wolves and the sheep. Previously, I'd read about McCord in Roland's short story collection Burnt Offerings and his novel The Legend of Victor Standish, and I couldn't help feeling that this character deserved a novel of his own. Well, this is it. McCord and his blood-brother Elu make the greatest pair since The Lone Ranger and Tonto, only in a more paranormal way, and the scenes where Elu guides McCord in and out of his mirror-world are priceless. Like Donna mentioned in the review above, there are plenty of historical figures in this book, which lends to it a certain verity. The characters, be they human or otherwise, seem so very real in Roland's work because he creates them with so much depth -- you know each and every one of them has a fully fleshed-out backstory, which Roland doles out to us readers in bits and pieces, keeping us reading as much to find out the mystery of Rachel's death and the role of the Gray Man in it as to learn more about these fascinating characters.
If you have read any of the Victor Standish novels, you will need to read this one also. It gives some if the background and motivations of Sam McCord. It is a very good read. Awaiting the remaining books in the series.
RY has written western that is half occult and half demonized. A Texas Ranger is looking for the culprit that killed his alleged daughter and then attempted her face. The Texas Ranger it's evil personified. He knows who else is bad, but has to wait until his potential is important. This is an excellent read for the gene.....ER
