Last Lessons of Summer edition by Margaret Maron Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Called “one of the most seamless Southern writers since Margaret Mitchell” by Publishers Weekly, Margaret Maron has won multiple awards and has received immense acclaim for her hugely popular Deborah Knott series. Now Maron introduces us to a new heroine who returns to her North Carolina roots to unearth the darkest secrets of her past. (This book was originally published in hardback by Mysterious Press in 2003.)
In the suffocating heat of a Southern August, Amy Steadman, heir to a merchandising and publishing empire, has come to lean out the house of her murdered grandmother—and perhaps find some answers. Beneath her quiet, accommodating manner, a storm is brewing.
For here in this gracious home, Amy’s own mother had committed suicide when her daughter was barely three years old. The tragedy put an end to her mother’s turbulent marriage to Amy’s father. But the secrets surrounding her mother’s death live on. Sorting through her grandmother’s things, Amy reflects on the parallels between her parents’ relationship and the growing suspicions she has about her own husband, who may love her legacy more than he loves her.
As she rediscovers the tobacco-rich land where she spent her childhood summers, Amy meets relatives she never knew, and feels an unexpected emotional connection with the burly, knowing state investigator looking into her grandmother’s murder. Suddenly, she begins to connect the dots between her troubled life and the heritage that shaped her. Yet the more she learns, the closer she comes to a murderous force who may be in her own family—one who will not hesitate to lie, deceive, or kill . . .

This was a quick, character-intense read. I wasn't sure I was going to keep reading in the beginning because the usual characters were not in the story, well two of the characters were, later on, but I came to care about the people, their business, and couldn't put the story down until I knew "who done it." I think this is actually one of Maron's best reads......the detail is explicit, but not over done. I love a story that feeds my visual imagination, and Maron's story "voice" created an impressive mystery in which she was able to tie up all the on-going pieces to the puzzle. Only 292 pages.....it's a fast-paced story that will fill the afternoon. Highly recommend!Product details

Last Lessons of Summer edition by Margaret Maron Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed it very much. Each time I thought I knew the solution there was another layer added. Characters well developed. A very good read.
Great book by a fantastic NC author.
There are some outstanding elements in this book by Margaret Maron, which one again returns to the Old South. She is one of my favorite authors, but her character progression is somewhat flawed this time around and she leaves us wondering why a happily married woman would suddenly suspect her husband of philandering.
I've read all of Margaret Maron's books and I don't know how I missed this one!! It was initially published over 10 years ago...but it slipped past me. I've been reading these mysteries since the 90s and usually wait impatiently for the next installment. I really enjoy the recurring characters and the southern background. ;-)
I feel so at home with Margaret Marin and her writing style! There's not a single book or short story that she has written that I haven't loved and I have been reading her since the early 90's! Last Lessons of Summer is no exception to this rule!
Margaret Maron must have written this in her sleep. Plot is thin, you'll guess what "happened" within a few chapters and the dialogue is awful.
I enjoy her Judge Deborah Knott series but this book lacks character development, plot and a mystery.
This is one of the best books Margaret Maron has written and I have read every other book she has written. I hope this is the start of a new series. I loved the character of Amy and also her sister, Beth. Since most of Margaret Maron's books nowdays take place in North Carolina, a series featuring Beth and her husband Jonas and their antique business would definitely be a "must read" for me!
